But the dogs just kept coming. And as of now, Chihuahuas account for one-third of the shelter's dog population. So tomorrow, the San Francisco Animal Care and Control Center is sending another dozen Chihuahuas to the Big Apple, where they expect they will be the "toast of the town."
"It's on ongoing problem," said Deb Campbell, spokeswoman for the San Francisco shelter. "We will send 12 off tomorrow and we will probably have another 12 arrive at the shelter by the end of the week.
There is an epidemic of backyard breeding of the "purse pups" that's just gone too far, Campbell said. "We see stray and pregnant Chiuhuahuas coming in here all the time -- there is no end in sight," she said.
The pups will board a Virgin Airlines flight Tuesday at 4:30 a.m. They will each get a seat in the cabin that includes WiFi and power outlets. And of course, anyone who is in the least bit curious about the pups can get live updates about their journey via Facebook and Twitter.
