It's been a bloody January
Two people were shot dead Sunday evening in Fisherman's Wharf inside a souvenir store on Jefferson Street.

Police say they have detained a man who they believe is connected to the shooting, according to media reports.

Authorities identified Qiong Han Chu, 30 and Feng Ping Ou, 30 as the two victims. Police said they worked at the store.

Police were called to the shop at 296 Jefferson Street at about 8:20 pm. on Sunday after reports of a shooting. Officers found both victims inside the shop where they were pronounced dead at the scene, according to media reports.

The double shooting brings the total of San Francisco homicides in 2011 to 11 -- higher than the five murders this time last year.

The violent month is cause for concern but not overreaction, Tony Winnicker, spokesman for Mayor Ed Lee, tells the Chronicle. Yet the mayor and Police Chief Jeff Godown are planning to meet this week to discuss the recent streak of violence.

Police last week arrested Almon J. Johnson on suspicion of strangling Vanessa Herrera in Sacramento and then driving her body to the Lower Haight in San Francisco where he set the car on fire. Police are also looking for Johnathan Walker, 29,  who they believe is responsible for shooting and killing Robert O'Bryant.
