Sunday Streets Means Safe Streets
The recent wave of bad news  -- shootings, parking tickets and skyrocketing pensions -- would make anyone feel down on San Francisco.

But here is a piece of good news: The wildly popular Sunday Streets festival is coming back.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has announced the 2011 dates for the Sunday Streets event, starting this spring. The agency will go into neighborhoods, closing off streets to cars every second Sunday of the month between April and October. This allows San Franciscans to run, bike, walk, or roller skate  without the fear of getting hit by Muni.

The event was started in 2008 by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, who was trying to create a safe environment for residents to get out of the house and be active for a day.
This year's Sunday Streets festival includes more routes and more activities that highlight the unique character of each neighborhood.
