Safeway Inc. is reconsidering whether to continue allowing the Congress on Your Corner events to take place at the grocery stores across the nation after the tragic shooting in Arizona that left six people dead and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in serious condition.

Teena Massingill, a spokeswoman for the Pleasanton-based company, said Safeway is reviewing the policy, but has not made a decision.

Giffords was holding a morning Congress on your Corner event at a Safeway in Tucson on Jan. 8 when she was shot in the head and six others were killed, including 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green. Police have arrested and charged Jared Loughner on suspicion of committing the shooting spree.

According to Giffords' Web site, the regular event was a chance for constituents to meet her and talk about issues and concerns in the district. The events typically draw 75 to 150 people.

After the shooting, Democrats were quick to hold their own Congress on Your Corner events in their districts, encouraging residents and voters not to be afraid.
