Housing Rights Committee Wants San Francisco Renters to Party
| Rent Party! |
Riffing off Jimmy McMilllian's The Rent Is Too Damn High Party, the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco is holding a fundraiser to benefit the organization. The event is on Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Latin American Club (3286 22nd St. at Mission), starting at 6 p.m. And yes, please bring your checkbook, although nobody will be turned away for lack of money.
"In a depressing economy, there is reason we need to party," says Sara Shortt, the committee's executive director.
The organization decided to call their fundraiser The Rent is Just Too Damn High, for obvious reasons. The average one bedroom in San Francisco is $2,000.
"He is a wing but but his platform is right on," Shortt said of McMilllian, who ran for New York governor last year. "We wanted a bold message -- that the rents are too damn high in San Francisco."
Donations will go toward helping the nonprofit do what it does best -- advocate for renters rights and send public records request to the San Francisco Housing Authority.
