• This is a terrible loss. As one of Joe's small group teachers, it saddens me tremendously. I'm glad that there are several on-line posts stating that Joe was beaten to death (or took a punch and hit his head on the way down), and that he was retreating from an attack by an assailant that he did not know. 'Involved in a bar brawl' is horrendous reporting and does not do justice to Joe's unassuming, compassionate nature and his stellar accomplishments. What a needless catastrophe: tragic for the Joe and his family, heartbreaking for Joe's friends and the UCSF community, and a loss for all the patients who would have benefitted from Joe's care. It happened in an instant. The assailant will also suffer consequences--though not as finite or severe. It is all so unfair. No one can bring Joe back or replace him. I miss him.

• Responding to Thomas and Chitz :Can't believe people are correcting terms and crap. And posting the he/she said bullshit. I guess That helps them to sleep at night . We must remember another innocent person is dead. a person that was trying to help others not waste it like a lot of shitty people out there.

• How would you know that fact, "Andrew Menninger"? Was it you that gave that one blow, or were you close by enough to see the punch? In any case, since you "know so much", have you spoken with the police, provided a description of what you saw and the alleged "puncher"? If in fact you do know this "crucial information", you wouldn't be posting it on an online forum. Like everyone else, your claims are merely no more than disgusting speculation at this point.

• This is an atrociously sensationalist piece of reporting. Rather than a "brutal" "barroom brawl" the victim was punched once and hit his head on the way down. This, rather than the punch, was almost certainly the proximate cause of his death. Sure, you got your pageviews with the highly inaccurate title, but it's not, you know, the truth.

• A bit of clarification about organ donation: one is not "taken off" of life support after donation. Legally, a patient is dead once brain-death is fully declared. The body is kept on "life support" machines to maintain blood flow (basically a breathing machine and monitors). During an organ procurement, the doctors effectively stop the heart and replace the blood inside of the organs with a cold preservation solution to keep them viable for transport.

• Agreed. Joe is not the fighting type. He has no temper. He was clearly collateral damage.

• I was one of Joe Hernandez's teachers. While I was not there at the scene and have no idea what happened, I have to say that Joe was one of the sweetest, most modest, and gentle of people I have ever encountered. Although we are all fooled sometimes, Joe being involved in a "barroon brawl" is unthinkable. If he was attacked, we should say that accurately and not sully his reputation by saying he was involved in a "barroom brawl".
