David Chiu Won't Be DA, But He 'Will' Be Mayor

What Does She Know?
Supervisor David Chiu surprised people when he took his name off the short list for replacing Kamala Harris as San Francisco's District Attorney.

Today, the SF Appeal gives some insight as to why he might have done this.

At a press conference yesterday in Chinatown, community leaders confirmed that City Administrator Ed Lee would definitely take the job as interim mayor, if asked. Afterward, Rose Pak, head of the Chinatown Chamber of Commerce claimed that Chiu "will" run for mayor in 2012.

Is that a demand?

Chiu responded vaguely, saying he has talked to Pak and many others about the future of this city, and where he might best fit in. He then gave SF Weekly his broken record statement about whether he will run for mayor.

"I have made no decision about whether I will run," Chiu said.

So then why would Pak claim she knows his political future?

"Anyone who knows Rose would not be surprised by anything she said," Chiu said. "I'll let that speak for itself."

David Chiu will never become mayor of San Francisco. He has failed his first big test. Every candidate comes to a point where their political future turns. Gerald Ford's moment came when he claimed, in a debate, that Poland was not under Communist domination. Mike Dukakis' moment came when he was asked what he would do if his wife was raped and murdered. Sarah Palin's moment came when she was asked what newspapers she read. David Chiu's crucial moment came when Chris Daly screamed, "I WILL HAUNT YOU!" Chiu should have responded: "BRING IT ON, DOUCHEBAG!" He would have won in a landslide!
