UC System on Track to Stop Educating California

UC president Mark Yudof told the Board of Regents yesterday that the university system is facing a crippling $1 billion budget shortfall next year, leaving the UC system no other choice but to stop educating students.
The Chronicle sums up the debacle: The university has already conceded to three years of cuts, and now with unavoidable expenses -- like higher salaries, rising energy costs, and millions of dollars in pension contributions -- something has to give.
"The moment is fast approaching when the university will no longer be able to guarantee admission to all California applicants who meet the eligibility criteria," Yudof says in the Chronicle.
He figures the university will turn away up to 30,000 eligible students every year. On top of that, the UC system will have to fire teachers, strip courses, and enroll more out-of-state students who have to payer higher tuition.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday started his "listening tour"," stopping at UC San Diego to hear what teachers, students, and faculty had to say about the higher education system. He plans on making plenty of stops throughout the state to get some feedback about how to raise money for education other than tuition increases. Newsom, who sits on the Board of Regents, plans to present some fresh ideas to fellow members.
