San Francisco Police arrested Almon J. Johnson, 29, on suspicion of murdering a woman and leaving her body in a burning car that was found in the Lower Haight Sunday morning.

Police held a press conference on Tuesday where they said Johnson allegedly killed Vanessa Herrera. He was booked at San Francisco County Jail on charges of homicide, arson, destruction of evidence, and parole violation.

Firefighters were called to the corner of Webster and Rose streets at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday  after there were reports of a car on fire. When they arrived, they found a Pontiac engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the fire, authorities pulled Herrera's burned body form the passenger side.

Investigators said they believe Johnson killed Herrera in Sacramento and then drove to San Francisco with her body. He stopped in the Lower Haight and set the car on fire, according to police.
