Stephen Buel, Ousted East Bay Express Editor, Hired on By Examiner

Categories: Media
Stephen Buel is Examiner-bound
Stephen Buel, the longtime editor of the East Bay Express abruptly ousted by the paper's majority owner earlier this month, wasn't out of work long.

Buel tells SF Weekly he's going to work for the San Francisco Examiner. "I am quite excited about that," he adds. Buel retains "a mighty 13 percent" ownership of the Express.

It's an interesting career move, and one that portends that there is a future for alt-weekly journalists -- though perhaps not at alt-weekly papers.

Buel will serve as assistant city editor, working under newly hired assistant managing editor Will Harper -- who had served as managing editor of this here paper you're reading for the past four years.

Prior to that, Harper was a longtime East Bay Express writer and columnist, working under, yes, Stephen Buel. So Harper's former longtime editor will now be reporting to him.

In any event, things should be interesting at the Examiner -- both in print and in the office.

Update, 3:10 p.m.: Examiner editor Deirdre Hussey confirmed Buel is on board. "Between him and Will Harper, our local coverage is going to get stronger." Buel replaces Julie Bunim, who departed from the paper in November.
