Maurice Van Buren, 47, is charged with being a bad bell-ringer
A Bay Area man has taken the express route to bad karma following a Friday bust for allegedly impersonating a Salvation Army bell-ringer and pocketing the money.

Maurice Van Buren, 47, is still in custody at Solano County Jail facing an embezzlement charge. He'd recently been dismissed from his job as a bell-ringer after a background check revealed he was a convicted sex offender.

The Vacaville man lasted only one day on the job -- but is charged with setting up on his own after that. Van Buren apparently pried a Salvation Army logo off a food box and used a cooking pot as his Salvation Army kettle.

After two weeks of allegedly impersonating a Salvation Army bell-ringer, Van Buren was tracked down via the GPS device he is mandated to wear as a sex offender.

Van Buren has been convicted in the past of rape by force; lewd or lascivious acts with a child under age 14; and oral copulation with a person under 14. He is now facing parole violation charges.
