Holly's Comedy Club Closes -- After Barely One Month
Our calls to the club have not yet been answered. No joke -- when one phones the shuttered club at 1000 Van Ness, the chipper answering machine message still welcomes all comers to "Holly's, where laughter lives."
Diana Gil-Osorio, a publicist with Ellipses Public Relations, said "there are no further details I can share with you" other than to not show up for amateur hour tonight. "It was a rather sudden closure." The decision to pull the plug after five weeks of operation was apparently made last week. "We did the launch for Holly's and we're as surprised as anyone," notes Gil-Osorio.
A visit to the club's website tersely informs readers that "we are working on an exciting new concept for 1000 Van Ness that we plan to introduce in early 2011."
Gil-Osorio says the "we" in the above statement is Kjell Qvale, Horn's partner in the defunct club. Qvale owns the British Motor Car Distributors across the street from 1000 Van Ness and has an extensive background in development and distribution of European autos. He was also an executive at Golden Gate Fields, making him a natural for stand-up comedy.
