Eugene Melendres Ramos, Charged With Rape of 2-Year-Old, In Court Today
|Alleged Dollar Tree rapist Eugene Melendres Ramos is back in court|
Ramos did not enter a plea on Friday and is due back at the Fremont Hall of Justice this morning. The 36-year-old is charged with committing a forcible lewd act with a child younger than 14; assault with intent to commit a sex crime; and attempted intercourse or sodomy with a child younger than 10. His 2005 conviction for sexually assaulting a child could count as a prior "strike." He could face up to 21 years if convicted.
A diagnosed schizophrenic, Ramos has spent time in both state mental hospitals and prisons. He has spent much of his life unable to work and living with his parents.
Ramos has lived with his family since his 2009 release from prison; he'd served four years for an '05 conviction for attempted sex with a minor.
On Thursday, Ramos was allegedly caught in the act of raping a 2-year-old girl at a Union City Dollar Tree -- he had purportedly removed her pants and diaper and removed his own pants and underwear. He was immobilized by a pair of bystanders who flagged down a passing BART police officer.
Police are asking witnesses to call Detective Sergeant Jared Rinetti at (510) 675-5229, or the tip line at (510) 675-5207.
