U.C. Office of the President communications director Lynn Tierney said UCSF Police Chief Pam Roskowski watched video of the incident -- which you can see here -- and "had no problem with" the officer's behavior.
"He was surrounded by 100 people, he was alone in the garage, they took his baton, and he feared for his safety," Tierney said of the officer.
Tierney claims the officer told authorities he heard members of the crowd saying "get his gun" during the melee. He was purportedly struck in the head by his own baton during this incident -- and the protester responsible has been booked for felony assault. Overall, at least 13 protesters were arrested today.
She adds that, during today's demonstrations, another cop was pulled over police barricades, and a third was hospitalized after being pushed down some stairs and kicked in the head.
