Folks at political consultant Jim Stearns' office are playing coy, but let's be realistic: Sen. Leland Yee isn't "making an announcement" at the Department of Elections today to lecture the media on the wonders of fluoridated water, or put in a bid for Aubrey Huff's Rally Thong, or let it be known he's sick of politics and wants to open up a pizzeria in Brooklyn.

Yee, perhaps the only man with his eye more obviously on a mayoral run than City Attorney Dennis Herrera, is taking out his papers and officially starting his mayoral campaign. You don't hire Stearns to wash your damn car, after all.

It will be an interesting run for the former supervisor and assemblyman. He would be San Francisco's first Asian mayor (assuming Supervisor David Chiu doesn't become acting or interim mayor in January) -- but he isn't particularly well-liked by many of Chinatown's kingmakers.

He's one of Sacramento's most prolific senators -- but he's also the man who helped introduce Ed Jew into politics.

Yee will join Herrera, Supervisor Bevan Dufty, businesswoman Joanna Rees, and a dozen or so other declared candidates for mayor. Assuming, you know, he isn't off to open a pizzeria in Brooklyn.
