Suspect In Kathleen Horan Murder Posed As Utility Worker

As announced at a Hall of Justice press conference this morning, the white male carried a tool box as he knocked on several tenants' doors at the 900 Chestnut Street apartment claiming he was checking for a gas leak.
The man is in his late 20s to early 40s, 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall. He wore a white hard hat, green safety vest with a reflective stripe, a utility belt, blue jeans or dark coveralls, and dark work boots. Police believe he may have an injury on his left hand and it may be bandaged.

Police say he was seen in the area of Leavenworth and Chestnut around 6:15 p.m.on Friday before entering the building, and believe the murder took place around 7 p.m. He was able to enter the building, despite its locked door and garage. They believe the man may have fled the area late Friday to Saturday afternoon and changed clothes.
Police refused to release any more details, or say whether they thought this was a robbery-homicide.

Horan had just returned to San Francisco from a vacation to Buenos Aires with her mother on Friday, and was discovered dead in her apartment early Saturday morning.
Police reminded the public they may ask the identification of any public utility worker who comes a'knockin.
