Kamala Harris Declares Victory -- In Los Angeles

Perhaps Kamala Harris made her 'major announcement' in L.A. because of the George Lopez factor...
As expected, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris declared victory in her race for Attorney General this morning in her "major announcement" this morning in Los Angeles.

"I stand before you today humbled to be chosen the next Attorney General," she told an ecstatic crowd. "...I'd like to acknowledge and thank District Attorney Steve Cooley for his leadership. I have talked to him and look forward to working with him."

She could have told him right then and there. Her vanquished Republican opponent is, after all, the district attorney of L.A. County.

"I came here to Los Angeles this morning to make this announcement because I thought it was important to make clear this position is about representing all the people of California," said Harris.

Fair enough. But "all of California" could be any town other than her home city of San Francisco or her opponent's backyard. Fresno? Ukiah? Monterey? Big Sur? All options, no?

Harris did not deign to take questions from local reporters calling in via the phone -- so it remains unclear if there is any possibility she will resign from her position as district attorney prior to her January swearing-in.

Should she do so, Mayor Gavin Newsom -- and not his yet-to-be-determined successor -- would appoint her replacement. Should the mayor appoint a member of the Board of Supervisors to take Harris' old job, then Newsom could appoint a moderate to that supe's spot as well.

Members of Harris' campaign told SF Weekly they hadn't heard of any scenario in which she would leave her San Francisco job early and set off a chain reaction of political appointments. For what it's worth, she stated this morning she and her transition team would be "working hard every step of the way between now and January 3."
