Looking ahead to bigger things
Pardon us, gentle reader, for the intolerable hedge in the above headline. Lacking the statistical prowess of some other observers, we're still going to play it safe -- yet it appears that San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris is on the verge of victory in the California Attorney General's race, and wise heads are calling the election in her favor.

By wise heads we mean, of course, our sister paper LA Weekly, which declared Harris the victor over Los Angeles D.A. Steve Cooley a couple of hours ago. Harris and Cooley have been locked for weeks in a virtual dead heat, with both trading the lead as provisional and absentee ballots were counted after the Nov. 2 election. The post-election posturing by each camp has gotten ugly at times, but it looks like all that is coming to an end.

Check out Gene Maddaus' post at LA Weekly for the whole story, but the bottom line is that Cooley would have to win the remaining votes to be counted -- in counties that have favored Harris -- by overwhelming margins to come back from his roughly 50,000-vote deficit.

Harris has yet to declare victory (if you don't count the premature declarations of earlier this month) or concede defeat. Stay tuned.
