Two San Francisco police officers are in the hospital after their marked cruiser crashed into a light pole in the "Bernal Cut" on Thursday night, the Examiner reported.

Their injuries were not life-threatening, according to the paper. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The situation? Puzzling.
The two officers, both out of Ingleside Station in Balboa Park, were headed southbound on San Jose Avenue near Randall Street on their way back to the staton house when they somehow lost control of their marked patrol car and slammed into a utility pole, reports said. Muni service on the adjacent J-Church line was disrupted, and will be until 4 a.m. today.

The accident occurred at 6:38 p.m., according to Bay City News. Rain had just begun to fall around that time, as anyone watching baseball could attest, but police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychuk was asked if alcohol could have been a factor.

"I cannot speculate on that," he said, according to the Examiner.

Luckily, The Snitch can. The Bernal Cut, as it's apparently known, has long been a haven for speeders, situated as it is away from homes, stoplights and other impediments to speed. Were the cops chasing a speeder? Did they just lose control? Did they really, really want to get back to the station in time to watch the rest of the baseball game?

We wish them a speedy recovery, and we also wish there was a better nickname for that stretch of San Jose Avenue.
