The friends and family of Derek Allen, the cyclist killed by a 44-O'Shaughnessy bus Oct. 7 are hoping something beneficial can come from the untimely death of 22-year-old.

A memorial fund in Allen's name has been established to help fund the ceramics program at his alma mater, Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. "Derek spent his high school years in this program that meant so very much to him and helped mold his amazing natural artistic talents," notes the website. "A vibrant, meaningful contribution will be made and inspiring stories about Derek with be shared among the teachers and students for many years to come."

A "ghost bike" has been installed for Allen at Sixth and Clement, and his aunt, Stephanie Allen, sent this poignant note to SF Streetsblog in hopes it would be attached to the impropmtu memorial to her nephew.

A full explanation -- and assignment of blame -- for Allen's death has not yet been offered.

A tow truck was required to lift a Muni bus off of Derek Allen and his bicycle. Police obscured the slain 22-year-old's body from the crowd by unfurling plastic tarps.
