Cyclist Derek Allen Killed in Collision with Muni Bus

• With all due respect to the family and friends, We,dont' know what makes us tick, But a challenge with a Bus and a Bike is not fair game, Driver, of a bus can't stop as fast as a bike.I lived and grew up-in S.F /55+ years ret. Driver. cyclelist stop the games' drive a bike like u drive a car it cost nothing to Pay attention, and driver of Bus you r considered operator's ur trained to know, that people will do all the thing u expect, open the door without looking, trying to squeez in between, u or go around, so word to the wise PAY ATTENTION/1000 .

• im so glad i got to see you one last time derek. i always had so much fun skating the park when you were there. u were such a unique person and i always appreciated that about you. i miss you buddy. kickflip cannonballs!!!

• i cant believe my child hood friend is gone as derek and i hadnt talked in a couple of months i still have all of those great memories of the 2 of us growing up.....when we first found our love for music and traded cds consistently in my back yard....when we first started skating and i broke my wrist, when we played football even tho we werent the football type.......derek i will always love u man and its going to be hard to say bye to you tomorrow!!!!!

• I was Karen Allen's unofficial goddaughter. We did everything together, and Derek was always there with a smile on his face raedy to help us with wahtever we wanted. He never lost hope in anyone, and always gave. He was a great guy and he will be missed. RIP Derek.

• Funeral is at St. Claire's in Pleasanton, at 1PM Saturday.

• Viewing is at 1:00 - 5:00 today, Tuesday at Graham-Hitch Mortuary in Pleasanton. Funeral on Saturday at Episcopalian Church in Pleasanton.

• Any news for funeral arrengement? I'm a cyclist of 6 yrs,riding everyday.I'm being very careful but sometimes get nervous. I get insulted sometimes,I almost got hit twice last week,one lady cut infront of me and never saw me.My prayers for the family and friends. be strong Cameron....God bless. Kieli

• My though to Derek close friends and families! I got hit from behind by muni line 9 junction Silver / san Bruno av in May I was waiting at light on the right side of road to do a left turn when muni arrive from behind @ 5 mph and hit me....my bike and leg got suck under the bus in a second. I am ok but could just imagine what could have happen at faster speed. I still bike from San Francisco to South SF but have a slightly different route. I am also very very coutious about bus...as u know why. I am still recovering from that accident from low back / right leg pain. Also as any job you do there is the good one that are not enough aknowledge for their great work and there is the one that are careless. I got a careless driver he did stop thank god or else my leg will have been hammer! He open the door and yield at me....he didn't even ask if I was ok which any normal human this will be their 1st question! Which tell me that he probably got involve in such accident. Also he was very good trying to cover his ass to the inspector saying it was my fault I didn't give him enough place to turn????he try to camouffle the right hand side mark that the bike created...he was also mean to customer! People like him should not have this type of job if you can't deal with people let nicer true human doing the work...but it can't happen because of their union....which protect the good, which is great, but also the selfish bad one that know that they can't get fire... I feel truly for Derek and family very sad tragedy! I also would like to thank bicycle coalition to make the city biking safer by opening new bike lane and the city for funding. We sure do need more safe bike lane mean while bike as safe as possible

• Derek was a good guy. He really did not deserve for something like this to happen to him. He was too young; my heart goes out to his parents.

• MUNI drivers are not the most patient but neither are the bicyclists in SF. More often then not the bicyclists will not follow the BASIC rules of the road. I didnt say that the motorists are any different. Break a hundred rules as a driver and you may be involved in some sort of accident. Break a hundred rules as a cyclist and you may be involved in some sort of accident. No I dont have any statistics for my numbers. But I do know that in an accident bicyclist are worse off. In this case, according to the news reports the bicyclist was wrong. Extra caution please to anyone on the road. And yes, I am a rider too. Miguel

• "Muni drivers are good about bikers" is just about the farthest thing from the truth I've ever heard.

• H., your seem to be attempting to support your statement that Muni drivers are good about bikers in part because they have bike racks. I'm not criticizing cyclists that use Muni but once you get off your bike and onto Muni, the driver is dealing with you as a passenger, not as a cyclist on the road. As a passenger, the driver doesn't need to worry about you riding on the road because you are on the bus and your bicycle is securely placed on the rack. All drivers, whether bus or car, need to be following the rules and looking out for others, whether they be on foot, on a bike, or in another vehicle. This is the second death we've seen this year in San Francisco alone. I do think that this is a very bike-friendly city but things still happen. May Derek Allen rest in peace. -Amanda

• Prayers to all, Or, 'Good Vibes' as we hippies say. The Muni drivers are good about bikers. Remember that many of them use the bike racks on the buses. I was a firefighter for five years and 90% of the calls we answered were medical and there's nothing worse than the death of a young person. It stays with you forever. Joy to his spirit. h.
