San Francisco's finest seem to live a mighty fine life -- 26.4 percent better off than cops in other cities, according to a new Civil Service Commission report.
San Francisco firefighters, meanwhile, earn 30.4 percent more money, on average, than their colleagues in other California cities with a population greater than 350,000.
According to the report:
As of July 1, 2010, the average maximum monthly wage for Police Officers in our survey
is $6,874 per month. This is $1,817 less than the maximum monthly wage currently
paid to San Francisco Police Officers.
San Francisco Firefighters, on average, earned $8,631 per month, $1,817 more
than the average firefighter in other midsize and large cities.
The report wasn't drafted to expose to the public that our cops and firefighters might be fatcats -- quite the opposite. It was conducted in accordance with a 1990 ballot initiative aimed at ensuring these public servants were paid enough. The ordinance says that these public safety workers must not be paid less than this big-city statewide average. Since then, however, unions representing these city workers have negotiated contracts with the city far outstripping most of their California peers.
So the routine survey is all but moot, except as a reminder of how comparatively well-paid our public safety workers are. Average pay for local police officers beat out cops in all California cities except for San Jose, where the boys in blue earn $8,999 monthly.
San Francisco firefighters, however, have no pay peers. Their average monthly rate of $8,554 beat out all other cities, with Oakland's $8,187 coming closest.
