The kids at Portola School are safe -- and ready to be picked up by their parents
San Bruno school officials evacuated 277 students and 10 staff members from Portola Elementary at PG&E's behest this morning, due to a gas smell in the air.

The odor was reported to staff between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. said Cheryl Peruchetti, a subcoordinator for the school district. Staff called PG&E, which suggested evacuating Portola. The school is located at 300 Amador Avenue, across Skyline Boulevard from the San Bruno blast zone.

The children are cooling their heels in the cafeteria of the Parkside Intermediate School, located not quite three miles away. They are ready to be picked up by their parents or other caregivers.

The source of the gas odor has not yet been determined.

On Monday morning, students at San Francisco's School of the Epiphany were evacuated when a gas smell was detected emanating from the garage. That, however, turned out to just be an improperly sealed propane container used in a church barbecue over the weekend.
