• As we draw closer and closer to the month of October (sharktober) we will be seeing more larger sharks in the inshore areas of central and northern California. It's nothing new or particularly daunting however people surfing or using the nearshore area for sports and recreation should come to terms with the fact that sharks are part of the seascape and as with hazardous surf conditions should be respected and considered whenever entering the ocean, especially during late summer and early winter when the large sharks return to the coast from the open ocean and deep sea. While actual injuries and hard contacts are fortunately rare common sense and preparations should be observed in regards to first aid resources, communications and contingency planning; especially when in remote or isolated stretches of the coast. AS with rogue waves, rip tides, under-tows and odd off mishaps, sharks can pose a hazard that can be mitigated by planning and preparedness. Surf with a buddy, Sean S.R.
