Shark Devours Sea Lion off Pacifica

A battalion of witnesses watched a shark estimated at 18 feet long, eviscerate and devour a sea lion yesterday at Pacifica's Linda Mar Beach, a well-known haunt for surfers and boaters.

The sighting of the possible Great White tearing a hapless mammal to shreds prompted police to post signs on the beach warning would-be swimmers to exercise good judgment before running into the water.

Despite the unusual spectacle of a shark feeding in full public view, surfers soon returned to the waters.

Perhaps it wasn't as carefree a move as you'd think. Unlike the movies, Great White Sharks eat only occasionally -- every few days or weeks. Not that this is much solace to the Pacifica sea lion.
