Judge Vaughn Walker May Lift Stay on Prop. 8 Ruling Today; Crowds Gather at City Hall
| What'll it be today, Judge Vaughn Walker? |
A ruling from Walker, one way or the other, is anticipated between 9 a.m. and noon today.
Should Walker lift the stay, same-sex marriage would be legal in this state for an indefinite period of time; a stay would be re-imposed once the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals officially accepts the case.
If the stay is not lifted, however, same-sex marriage will remain on hold for perhaps years to come while the matter is adjudicated.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Attorney General Jerry Brown, the City and County of San Francisco, and the victorious plaintiffs' lawyers have all filed briefs supporting the stay be lifted -- and same-sex marriage be legalized as soon as possible.
That might come in an hour and a half -- or years from now. Or never.
