Coming to San Francisco: Ernest Hemingway
San Francisco will be the backdrop for an original HBO movie that chronicles the romance between Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn, officials at the mayor's office and San Francisco Film Commission announced today.

The film, Hemingway & Gellhorn, stars Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman in the title roles. It narrates the world travels of "Papa" with Gellhorn, a journalist with whom he enjoyed a turbulent courtship and marriage later in life.

While the movie is going to be shot in and around the city, San Francisco is not actually among its fictional settings, said Film Commission permit coordinator Laurel Barsotti. The movie follows events in Spain, Shanghai, Key West, and Havana -- but San Francisco or other parts of the Bay Area will stand in for all those locations, Barsotti said.

"It is our understanding that they will remain entirely in the San Francisco Bay Area," she said.

The movie is in pre-production now, with filming scheduled to begin in February 2011 and last for about two months, according to Barsotti. With all the North Beach types who still like to dress up like Hemingway and throw back a few of the maestro's preferred mojitos, we sure hope it's not to hard to pick Owen out of the crowd.
