Doctor Gets 11 Years for 'Inappropriate and Unprofessional' Vaginal Exams on Latinas

Categories: Crime, Health
A San Francisco doctor who catered to Spanish-speaking patients has been sentenced to almost 11 years in prison for sexually assaulting women in his care with unnecessary "pelvic examinations."

Jose Rosas, a general practitioner from Peru, was sentenced yesterday to 10 years and eight months in prison for abusing three female patients with limited English-language skills.

"Trusting their doctor, the women submitted to pelvic exams," according to a statement from the office of District Attorney Kamala Harris. Rosas then "conducted the vaginal exams in an inappropriate and unprofessional manner by digitally penetrating the victim patients for prolonged periods of time."

Rosas, who practiced in the heavily Latino Mission District, was arrested in 2005 and convicted following a jury trial last year.

"Jose Rosas used his position as a doctor to abuse his victims," Harris said in her statement. "This sentence sends an important message to all that abuse positions of trust."
