Tree-Killer Loose in Golden Gate Park

The Lorax now speaks for fewer trees
The city's pickings for its forthcoming "landmark tree tour" has gotten a bit slimmer.  An unknown vandal or vandals has systematically slaughtered 44 trees in Golden Gate Park -- for no obvious reason.

The Chronicle reports that 15 young trees were discovered sawed in half on Wednesday. This comes on the heels of some 29 other trees being sawed, pulled from the ground, or stripped of their bark in five other attacks since May.

The spate of killings has left park-goers outraged, and led Recreation and Park Department head Phil Ginsburg to decry it as "The epitome of people behaving badly in the park."

Er, Phil? Might want to rethink that epitome.
