Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the planning department...
Porn downloaded by city workers, on city time

Just when you thought the ongoing porn scandal within the city's planning department couldn't grow any more bizarre, along come a nude man, a chainsaw, and a hula hoop.

An SF Weekly public records request for the material that has resulted in the firing of five veteran planners -- so far -- turned up scores of images from department employees' hard drives. A sampling follows. (The images are not safe for work, as amply demonstrated by the spate of firings).

The scandal broke in December of last year, when a whistleblower objected to the above image being e-mailed around the office. A subsequent investigation revealed years of racy e-mails either sent or received by department employees. The above image was purportedly sent by veteran planner Craig Nikitas. Oddly, after longtime zoning administrator Larry Badiner was fired, allegedly for not taking steps to halt the raunchy e-mails, it was Nikitas who was named his temporary replacement.

The porn investigation encompassed not only pictures and videos sent around the office but files downloaded onto city computers -- on city time. The following were found on the hard drives of planning department employees. Sources have told SF Weekly that the ongoing investigation led to planners pointing the finger at colleagues whose propensity to view and download porn during working hours had become well-known. The following represents only a small sampling of what has thus far been uncovered.

Funny thing is, images like these, (and worse ones), can be all found on Flickr (using the site compfight, especially). Now, is that considered porn to a corporate firewall if you view the images on Flickr?

I don't see what the big deal is, it looks like city workers were just flipping through the latest SFWeekly gallery.

Sorry, but a naked man with a chainsaw is not "porn" It is no more "porn" than Michaelangelo's David or Boticelli's Venus.

raw deal says:

I don't see a single picture here that I would classify as 'porn'. Just because they are naked doesn't mean it's pornography. It's just a bunch of stupid drunk pictures. I bet half the employees in the city see this stuff in some form or another at work.

Tami says:

Whether or not this technically qualifies as porn is beside the point. It is inappropriate to be viewing naked man with a chainsaw on the taxpayers dime.

I'm sure they can't show the really bad stuff, but yeah these mostly look like the dumb joke emails we get from others.

Skyler says:

This is not porn by any stretch, but it is pretty foolish for a professional to be sending this to everyone in his office.

Circe says:

I too don't consider just a naked guy posed in weird ways to be "porn" per se.
However, it does NOT belong on your work computer.
If they'd already received a warning about this sort of thing, well that's what rules are about. Get the nekkid pics on your phone or at home, not at work. Sheesh!

I don't think its even meant to be sexy. His penis is clearly flaccid. Everyone knows flaccid penises are meant for humor purposes only. No one can take a flaccid penis seriously.

This is not pornography says:

Why? Because it's not intended to be arousing, period. It's a joke. It's immature but not perverse, and calling something "porn" just because it involves nudity is being a morality cop.

The employees should have been barked at, but not fired, or at least not fired for something that suggests they were freaking masturbating at work. They weren't.

Hip o cracy says:

Okay sfweekly there you go again with "sources". If these sources are either dhr employees or sf planning management, that is a breach of confidentiality and rises to the level of a breach in policy of city work rules, and justifiably inappropriate in the same manner as this porn thing. Get it yet?
