Steven Hayashi took the blame for the mauling death of his step-grandson by his pit bulls
Steven Hayashi, the Concord man whose herd of pit bulls mauled his 2-year-old step-grandson to death, spoke with not one but two TV reporters today from jail. His message: I am to blame.

"Having dogs is my fault. That is my burden I will carry for the rest of my life," Hayashi, 52, told KTVU ."It's my responsibility to make sure things like this (do) not happen."

He told an NBC reporter: "I tried to get rid of as many [of the pit bulls] as I can, selling them or giving them away. But I kind of got stuck with five dogs. I knew five dogs was too many to take care of. ... Those dogs cost me way more than it's worth. They cost me the life of a 2-year-old boy."

All five of Hayashi's pit bulls were euthanized following yesterday's attack. Jacob Bisbee, 2, died after wandering away from family members and being attacked by three pit bulls in Hayashi's garage.

Hayashi said he would never let his young relatives near the dogs "without supervision," and he tried to keep Bisbee away from the dogs "as best as I can." He is being held on suspicion of felony child endangerment and possession of mischievous animals that result in death. Bail is set at $120,000.

"I thought pit bulls had a bad rap," he said. "I'm one of those animal lovers who thinks dogs are dogs. Now I mistrust all dogs."
