While stranded Muni riders grumbled, Keith Bechtol cruised to victory on yesterday's San Francisco Marathon -- the very first marathon he's ever run.

But don't chalk up the 25-year-old Stanford astrophysicist's unofficial course record of 2:23:28 to beginner's luck.

He ran track and cross country at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. and came 14th in the 2007 NCAA 10K Championships.

That year, he also graduated from college Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and was named the Colonial Athletic Association's scholar-athlete of 2007.
