Jeff Adachi, who can now go sleep
If Public Defender Jeff Adachi's little-viewed twitter feed is to be believed, he has managed to collect a whopping 75,000 signatures for his "Smart Reform" measure to mandate city workers contribute more to their pension and health care plans.

Adachi had told SF Weekly he was hoping to reach 70,000 signatures by this evening (45,000 of which must check out as valid). Apparently, he's done that.

Adachi's measure has been demonized by the city's labor unions -- and is unpopular with the left-leaning politicians dependent upon those unions for cash and foot soldiers come election time. It's an odd bit of legislation which has united Adachi, former Green Party mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez, and wealthy donors against labor -- and, not incidentally, would save San Francisco $167 million in its first year alone, according to Adachi.

If the signatures check out and "Smart Reform" makes it onto the ballot, its author foresees an electoral victory. It will be interesting to see what could occur to keep his prediction from coming true in November.
