'N-Word,' Assault on Muni Platform Lead to Felony Hate-Crime Charges
Most of the charges carry additional hate-crime enhancements, according to Erica Derryck, spokeswoman for the office of District Attorney Kamala Harris. While the defendant, Christopher Brymer, is white, Derryck said the ethnicity of a hate crime's perpetrators isn't technically relevant.
"He could be yelling the 'N-word' at these victims and they could be Filipino," Derryck said.
According to court documents, Brymer encountered the victim, Shaun Parker, on a Muni platform at Third Street and Mission Rock in Bayview on Monday. He allegedly called Parker "nigger," apologized, then picked an unidentified object out of a garbage can and began beating Parker on the head with it while yelling "Nigger, die."
Parker suffered a gash to the head, but was able to defend himself with a pocket knife, according to a statement from the DA's office.
Brymer has been charged with counts including assault with a deadly weapon and battery. He pleaded not guilty today in San Francisco Superior Court and was being held on $200,000 bail.
