Diane von Furstenberg Shills for Nancy Pelosi by Creating Hideous Tote Bag

The GOP has a new enemy: Diane von Furstenberg

​Renowned fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, apparently not content with leaving the wrap dress as her lasting contribution to the progress of humankind, has entered the political arena this season with a bold new act of haute couture: a tote bag inspired by, and intended to raise money for, House Speaker and San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

As Furstenberg explains in a mass e-mail sent out today, proceeds from sales of her "limited edition tote bag" will go to "support Speaker Pelosi and courageous House Democrats who are under increased attack by those who wish to take our country back to the policies of former President George W. Bush." (We hate to break it you, Diane, but W. looks like Franklin Roosevelt compared to some of the nutcases ascending in the Tea Party-influenced GOP.)

Take that, W.

​On the bright side: The bag is both ugly and expensive. Emblazoned with the words, "Team Pelosi," it looks sort of like one of those public-library satchels so frequently employed by transient men of a certain age to carry, say, rotting bananas and typed manifestos against the Rothschild family. If one regards Furstenberg's illustrious career as a testament to frump, this accessory is a subtle, yet wholly worthwhile, coda to her achievements.
