S.F.'s DNA Lab Chief Resigns

| SFPD's DNA lab has a 400-case backlog. |
The position will remain unfilled, SFPD Assistant Chief Jeff Godown told the San Francisco Chronicle. Because dysfunctional labs are better off without managers, right?
Unfortunately, the backlog has done damage. A man on trial for rape and murder of a transgender woman was free for two years while the DNA evidence that would have linked him to the crimes sat idle.
More recently, a toddler was taken hostage by a man who should have been linked by DNA testing to an April homicide. The man was killed by police in a shoot-out.
