Erica Derryck, spokeswoman for D.A. Kamala Harris, said in a press release that Pedro Hernandez was caught by a teacher's aide sexually assaulting his step-granddaughter at Sanchez Elementary School in the Castro on June 3. He had allegedly brought food to the girl as a ruse for isolating and sexually assaulting her, and the attack was caught on videotape, according to the press release.
Hernandez fled the scene when caught, and was arrested a week later at a homeless shelter in San Bruno. It is alleged that he had assaulted the girl at least three times over an 11-month period. His adult children -- the victim's parents -- were also arrested on June 8 and charged in connection with helping Hernandez escape from police, according to the press release.
Hernandez pleaded not guilty today during his arraignment at the Hall of Justice and is being held at the county jail on $2 million bail. He is charged with seven felony counts related to sexual abuse of a child.
