McDonald's Shrek Recall Is Just What Ogre Would Have Wanted

Perhaps this is what it means to behave like a 'real ogre'?
Unless you enjoy the taste of Cadmium with your McDonald's fare, take note. The fast-food giant recalled 12 million glasses tied in with the current film Shrek Ever After.

Now, children being exposed to toxins is not funny -- but hear us out. Because the notion of humans -- and big business -- being menaced by Shrek-related paraphernalia is actually eerily fitting to the plot of the current movie. In it, the big green ogre laments that he's become a staid family man, and pines for the days when he could behave like a "real ogre," and scare the bejeezus out of people.

Well, there you go. Also, there's a local tie-in to this ogre of a recall:

San Francisco's Rep. Jackie Speier -- who in January introduced a bill to ban Cadmium in children's jewelry -- received an "anonymous tip" that the McDonald's glasses were problematic, and eventually sent along samples to the U.S. Consumer Product Saftey Commission.

"Our children's health should not depend on the consciences of anonymous sources," Speier said in a statement today. "Although McDonald's did the right thing by recalling these products, we need stronger testing standards to ensure that all children's products are proven safe before they hit the shelves."
