His excuse is "personal issues," and reading his books and articles, it is clear he indeed has many personal issues.
Hitchens, a contributor to Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, and the greater intellectual ether, is in the middle of promoting a memoir, Hitch-22. He was to discuss his lineage, his roots, and probably what he had for breakfast with journalist Lowell Bergman of PBS' Frontline and the UC Berkeley School of Journalism.
Hitchens isn't afraid to get under people's skins -- he is a famous atheist, he was an unabashed hawk in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he once nearly got Mos Def to strike him, and he is also apparently something of a celebrity whore: he has canceled appearances in San Francisco and the Peninsula, but he's still on for an event in Los Angeles on June 28, where Sean Penn will introduce the Hitch, according to Hitchens' Web site.
No other word is immediately available. We'll let you know if we hear more, or if Hitchens himself drops by the house, looking for the American left (it just exited. Sorry, dude).
