Busy Day on BART Tracks: Parolee Chase, Passenger Trapped Beneath Train

​Passengers in BART trains spent an ungodly amount of time stuck going nowhere today, but it could always be worse. You could be stuck beneath the train, which was the case at Embarcadero not long ago. Major delays are in effect, and the condition of the rider is not currently known.

In an unrelated bit of drama, meanwhile, a man the SFPD describes as "a wanted parolee" leaped onto the tracks at around 1:40 p.m. and fled from police. Power was cut in the vicinity as a precaution, and police soon tracked down the man.

Meanwhile, at Embarcadero, a person was purportedly struck and pinned beneath a train at around 2:30 p.m. No trains are currently leaving from San Francisco to the East Bay and the number of westbound trains has been cut to a trickle as well (only Pittsburg/Bay Point to SFO trains are heading toward the city). Only the Fremont to Pittsburg line is unaffected.

According to BART spokesman Jim Allison, the injured individual has been removed from the trackway and transported to San Francisco General Hospital. A BART police investigation is under way.

Update, 3:30 p.m.: Apparently a car is pinioned beneath a truck on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge right now, leading to massive delays. Face it, you're just not getting out of San Francisco. Unless you take a ferry.

Update, 4 p.m.: BART spokesman Jim Allison says the man struck by the train was "an apparent suicide attempt" by a black man in his 20s who "went down onto the tracks of his own accord." Allison said that the man's injuries are apparently not life-threatening -- though he may have lost one or more limbs. San Francisco General Hospital spokeswoman Rachael Kagan could not confirm this, as federal privacy laws forbid her from releasing the status of a patient unless provided with said patient's name -- and the identity of today's BART victim has not yet been released.
