Passengers were forced to hoof it out of the Muni Metro Tunnel today
Scores of Muni riders, blinking after nearly an hour trapped underground, straggled out of the Duboce and Church tunnel moments ago. The walkers followed the emergence of an eye-catching six-car train, which also contained impatient riders.

Passengers told SF Weekly that a problem with the overhead wiring led to the delay. Our messages for Muni have not yet been returned; 511 is reporting a loss of power between Church and Van Ness stations.

"We went 'bump, bump' and I thought we'd hit someone," said passenger William Poor (who snapped all these photos). "But it was the overhead connection. It sparked up a bit and then we just sat."

"Wow, that was fun," remarked another rider." Now how do I get to Colma?"

Muni passegers wandered up out of the Metro Tunnel after a long delay
UPDATE, 6 p.m.: Muni spokeswoman Kristen Holland confirmed that, at around 2:30 p.m., the overhead antenna on an inbound N-Judah -- called a "pantograph"; you learn something every day -- damaged the wire in the Metro Tunnel. This, in turn, led to electrical failures throughout large swaths of the tunnel.

Even now, eastbound service between Castro and Embarcadero Stations has been diverted to above-ground shuttles.

Muni crews are hopeful they'll repair the problem "soon."
