Gavin Newsom: I'll Sign Arizona Boycott
| Vis-a-vis the boycott resolution, he'll sign it. Vis-a-vis methods of signing it, he prefers a pen... |
He did so using language that is awkward at best and grammatically incorrect at worst:
"We want to be judicious about how we appropriate ourselves," he said. "A number of those contracts help poor people ... we want to be judicious how we appropriate ourselves vis-a-vis those contracts."
In other words, we're not going to yank funding away from the Arizona-based company that processes the payments for the JobsNow program just for the hell of it. No surprise there -- the supes' Budget and Finance subcommittee re-upped a related contract yesterday and added $44 million to it with nary a mention of the Grand Canyon State and its controversial immigration laws.
While the sponsor of the Arizona boycott, Supervisor David Campos, has told SF Weekly he believes the resolution will affect a number of city contracts, the sole supe to vote against it, Sean Elsbernd, has described it as "totally symbolic"
It remains to be seen who is more correct -- vis-a-vis the mayor's actions, of course.
