First Fallout From Planning Department's Porn Scandal?

Categories: Government
Multiple sources within the planning department confirmed to SF Weekly that influential zoning administrator Larry Badiner tearfully cleaned out his desk and carted off his belongings last week.

Badiner, a 20-plus year veteran of the department, was the most senior planner recommended for firing by department head John Rahaim. At issue was a years-long office practice of sending and receiving e-mails with pornographic imagery and racy content on office computers, as first reported earlier this month by the San Francisco Chronicle. While Badiner was not accused of sending the e-mails, the manager allegedly did not make any moves to stop their circulation.

SF Weekly has filed a public records request to obtain samples of the offending messages. An unnamed source told the Chronicle they contained Debbie Does Dallas-caliber imagery.

Longtime planner Craig Nikitas confirmed to SF Weekly that he is one of the other employees Rahaim has moved to fire, but would not answer any questions about his or his colleagues' employment status.

Calls to Badiner's line revealed a message in a voice not his own revealing he would be "on vacation" from May 17 to 26. Multiple calls to Rahaim querying about the planners' employment status have not been returned, nor have similar messages left for the union that represents the planners, Local 21.

In December, a female employee displeased with the e-mail that landed in her work inbox filed a complaint against various planning officials. The city's Human Resources Commission is investigating the allegations.

Planning staff have purportedly been told to not discuss this with the media or others as this is a personnel matter.
