Pot Activist Jack 'The Hemperor' Herer Dies at 70

This came as difficult news for pot proponents nationwide, many of whom were first introduced into the concept of Marijuana activism by Herer, author of the million copy-selling book The Emperor Has No Clothes, detailing the fiasco of Marijuana prohibition.
"This is a sad day," says Aaron Smith, the California director of the Marijuana Policy Project. "I remember seeing Jack at a rally when I was probably 12 years old down in Orange County. He initially got me interested in this issue way back then."

After purportedly smoking his first joint at the late age of 30, Herer made up for lost time. His 1985 book is viewed as one of the seminal elements of the now burgeoning Marijuana legalization movement.
"Jack was probably the most well-known [Marijuana activist] from the sheer number of years he worked on this issue," said Smith. "He was so enthusiastic, all the way up to the end."
