Has Muni CEO Nat Ford Even Read SF Weekly Cover on Muni?

We reported earlier how Muni CEO Nat Ford called a mandatory meeting for the transit agency's top brass in the wake of SF Weekly's cover story, "The Muni Death Spiral." Ford purportedly handed all of his top lieutenants a copy of the paper, gave them 20 minutes to read it, and then railed against "snitches" informing the media of Muni's myriad problems.

Ford's name also appeared at the bottom of a critical letter to SF Weekly regarding the story, which is currently slated to run in a forthcoming edition of our paper.*

So it came as something of a surprise when San Francisco author Harry Pariser told SF Weekly he handed a copy of the article to Ford at Wednesday's Budget and Finance meeting, and the CEO supposedly told him he hadn't read it.

Our calls to Muni querying, bluntly, if Ford actually read our story before weighing in on it, have not yet been returned.

On Wednesday, "I gave the SF Weekly cover story to Mr. Nathaniel Ford, who had not seen it. He told me he doesn't read blogs when I asked him about it at first. But this is a news article. Amazing!" said Pariser.

Pariser handed Ford a copy of the article as he left the meeting. "I told him that if no one had showed him that, then heads should roll."

If Pariser's recollection of the incident is true, we're left with two possibilities:

  • A. Ford was blowing off a meddlesome person

  • B. Ford didn't bother to read this article before allegedly mandating his top brass do so and lecturing them on it; he also didn't read it before signing his name on a letter to SF Weekly and lecturing us on it.

*An earlier version of this story didn't note that we haven't yet printed Ford's letter. Sorry to inspire fruitless site searches.

UPDATE, 3:30 p.m.:
Looks like it was Possibility A. Muni spokeswoman Kristen Holland relays the following: "Mr. Ford shared that he was trying to get to a meeting when, he believes, the exchange took place. He has certainly read the article."
