Third Swarming Attack on T-Third Line; Police Beef Up Presence

Categories: Crime

San Francisco Police believe a 15-year-old boy charged last week in the March 22 attack of a 57-year-old Asian woman caught in the above recording may be part of a larger group of teens swarming and beating riders of the T-Third line.

On Jan. 24, a group of black teenagers attacked and severely beat 83-year-old Huan Chen. The attack put him in San Francisco's General Hospital, which he never left. He died on March 19; the Medical Examiner's office has yet to determine if his beating led to his death -- which would make this a homicide case. (The Chronicle notes that the 15-year-old in custody was out of town when Chen was attacked and is not a suspect in that incident).

On Saturday evening, a 29-year-old Asian man was swarmed and beaten while riding the T-Third by a group of black teens who boarded at Third and Williams. This was, apparently, not a mugging but simply a beating conducted as an enterprise in and of itself. "They didn't say anything. They just began the attack," said police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza.

Esparza adds that it hasn't escaped the SFPD's notice that all of these attacks on Asians by groups of black teens occurred within a stone's throw of one another and during similar times of day.

Patrol officers will be "stepping up" their presence in the area for the time being, according to Esparza.
