• Donofcali, it's nice of you to answer the question you pose, but if you're going to answer it, you need to provide a believable answer. Police are not worried that if they don't have marijuana violators to arrest, then they're just going to be laid off. (What, there won't be enough other crimes to go around? And since when in the real world do decreases in crime and arrests result in police lay-offs?) Here are much better answers to the question you pose: 1) The opponents believe that marijuana is a gateway drug. They may be *wrong* about that, but that doesn't mean that they don't hold that opinion honestly. 2) Law enforcement may want marijuana laws for the same reason Gascon wants a sit/lie law in SF and for the same reason that the SFPD cracks down on Muni fare evaders: They believe that people who commit other more serious crimes are far more likely than the general population to evade bus fares, sleep on the sidewalk, and sell or use pot. Again, they may be *wrong* about that, but that doesn't mean they don't hold the opinion honestly. They may believe that arresting someone for selling or using pot provides a great pretext for searching them and, say, finding a gun or burglary tools. .

• Funny how the main opponents are law enforcement officials. Why do people who are responsible for implementing laws oppose making something legal that is currently illegal? The actual difference to them is that they will not need to arrest people whom they are currently arresting. Why do they oppose that? I'll answer the question. They view this law as a jobs program. If they can't arrest these people, then they're worried about their jobs. A nation that incarcerates its citizens in order to provide jobs for policemen is not America, it is Monkeyland.
