If Newsom Serious About Lt. Gov Run, Political Timing Is Right

Categories: Politics

If so, the timing would work out eerily well for Newsom -- if he accepts the voluntary expenditure limit for a statewide run, the deadline to submit a candidate statement for the voters' handbook is Wednesday, Feb. 17. Since the voluntary expenditure limit for the Lt. Gov. race is currently not quite $7 million -- way, way, way more than Newsom amassed in his run for governor -- it stands to reason that he may abide to live within the means of the voluntary limit, meaning it would behoove him to get that information into the pamphlet.

But is Newsom even running? "I've heard it from 25 different people," said one veteran San Francisco political consultant. "It may be completely speculative. But there's definitely some kind of rumor out there."

This brings up two intriguing political situations:

Lt. Gov candidate Janice Hahn's campaign is being managed by Garry South -- the scorched-earth strategist most recently employed by one Gavin Christopher Newsom in his less-than-stellar bid for the governorship. Well, that ought to be interesting. You think South would take it easy on Newsom after the latter enriched him by $264,000? Neither do we.

Also, should Newsom prevail in the race -- no given, by the way -- it would set off a full-fledged political cage match on the progressive-dominated Board of Supervisors, which gets to decide who would serve as our next mayor. Mayor Aaron Peskin? Mayor David Chiu? Or would it be Mayor Leland Yee or even Mayor Matt Gonzalez?

One thing's for sure -- it won't be Jackie Speier. Or will it?
