Bike Coalition Chief Pedals off to Sabbatical in Amsterdam

Categories: Local News
San Francisco Bicycle Coalition executive director Leah Shahum, a key figure in the push to spur city workers to paint the new bike lane network you're now seeing around town, just announced she's taking an eight-month sabbatical in Amsterdam.

Is this how bike lanes are planned?

During that time she'll be replaced by former Coalition board chair Renee Rivera.

In addition to prostitution and drugs, Amsterdam is known for the large number of city trips taken by bicycle. Shahum did not immediately return a call requesting comment. But we're assuming the point is not to observe hooking or toking, but rather learn about how the city managed to become bicycle commuting capital of the world.

We found it curious that the extraordinarily competent-seeming Andy Thornley, the  Coalition's program director, will not be taking the helm while Shahum is gone. We'll update you on this story as it develops.
