| Hail Norton! |
As we've posited before, one's take on
"Emperor" Joshua Norton can serve as an window into his or her worldview. Either you laud 19th-century San Franciscans' acceptance of the busted speculator's declaration that he was the Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico as an early sign of our laudable tolerance -- or you read it as an early sign of our ability to turn a blind eye to the loud, disruptive, and mentally ill. Or, maybe you think it's all of the above.
In any event, whenever Norton's birthday rolls around, loyal members of the San Francisco-founded fraternal order
E Clampus Vitus -- who regard the man as their once and future emperor -- gather at his final resting place in Colma. On Saturday, San Francisco's original drunken lunatic was honored with a day of drunken lunacy. And we've got the pictures to prove it.
