Don't forget to ask her what her name is this time, Steve!
It's been a frustrating year for the San Francisco 49ers. But one promotion certainly has gone as the team planned: Local-born Department of Public Works steam-cleaner Steve Mahoney's gig as the Harley-riding team standard-bearer was a smashing success for the team's home opener -- and the team this week made good on its promise to Mahoney that he'd be leading the Niners onto the field once more on Monday Night Football.

Mahoney told SF Weekly that he's been tapped to do some kind of game-opening act -- he has no idea what -- for the team's Dec. 14 contest vs. Arizona. Good thing for it. He's had the bike repainted.

He's now added red and white stripes down the fenders and on the tank to make the bike scream "Niners!" with even more volume. Yes, he admits, this has a candy cane-like look. Very seasonal.

While Sunday's loss put the 49ers at 5-7, the Harleyman isn't ready to call it a season. "Don't count 'em out," he says. "I always wait to the bitter end."
